Leather recliner chair: which leather we use and why full-grain
A leather recliner chair endures more than almost any other piece of furniture in the house: you adjust it daily and sit in it for whole evenings at a time. That is why the type of leather counts more heavily on a recliner chair than anywhere else. We use exclusively Italian full-grain leather: the top, strongest layer of the hide, with the natural grain still visible. It is treated to be water-repellent and stain-resistant, and unlike corrected or split leather, full-grain only becomes more beautiful over the years: it shapes itself to you and develops a warm, deep sheen. Under the upholstery sits the same base as in the rest of the recliner chairs collection: a hardwood frame with a 10-year frame warranty and electric recline with a 2-year warranty on motors and electronics. Leather here is not a separate product line, but the upholstery choice for a recliner armchair that lasts for decades.
Leather or fabric for a chair you use every evening
For a chair you use every evening, leather or fabric is not a matter of taste alone. Leather is cooler at first contact, easy to keep clean and becomes suppler over the years; it is the choice for anyone who wants to keep the chair the longest and spend as little time on upkeep as possible. Fabric feels warmer straight away, offers the widest choice of colours and textures and is kinder to your budget; velvet sits in between, with a rich look that asks a little more maintenance. If you live with children or pets, the stain-resistant full-grain leather is in practice often the calmest choice. Choosing colours, requesting swatches and looking after the leather
The leather colours are part of our palette of 50+ colours, from sand beige and cognac to anthracite and deep blue. Never choose from a screen: leather comes out differently in your living room than in a product photo, and daylight and lamplight each paint a different picture. So request a free leather sample first and lay the swatches at home on the spot where the chair will stand. The upkeep after that is simple: wiping regularly with a soft cloth and removing stains with a slightly damp cloth is enough, precisely because the full-grain leather is treated to be water-repellent and stain-resistant. If you are fitting out a film corner and want the same upholstery on a row of seats, you will find the same Italian full-grain leather on the leather cinema seats, in the same colours, so a single chair and a row combine seamlessly.
Leather Recliner Chairs - Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, it is built for exactly that. On a recliner chair the upholstery moves every day: the backrest tilts, the footrest folds out and the leather folds and stretches at the transitions between the moving parts. That is why we upholster these chairs in Italian full-grain leather. What you see after years of daily reclining sits exactly on those movement zones: at the fold from seat to footrest and along the backrest, supple creases form in the places where the leather bends time after time. That is not a defect but the normal behaviour of natural leather that moves every day. Cheaper split leather or imitation leather can crack or flake at exactly those points after a few years; full-grain leather does not. If you see something other than such a crease, a small tear or loose stitching for instance, contact our customer service; that is not part of normal use and we look at it separately.
The sample pack contains real pieces of the material we upholster with, not a printed colour card but the leather itself, so you can judge the colour, the grain and the feel at home. Alongside leather swatches you can also request fabric and velvet swatches if you are still deciding between materials. You request it through the website, the pack is free and commits you to nothing. Lay the swatches on the spot where the chair will stand and look at them at different moments of the day, in daylight and in lamplight; colours shift more than you would expect. If you live in the Netherlands or Belgium, you can combine the sample pack with a free video consultation, in which we look at colour and configuration with you. Because every chair is only produced after your order, comparing swatches first is the logical first step.
With surprisingly little effort, and that is exactly why leather suits a chair that gets used every day. Wipe the chair regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, and wipe stains away immediately with a slightly damp cloth. At its core the full-grain leather asks no more than that, because it is treated to be water-repellent and stain-resistant: spilled coffee or wine does not soak in straight away the way it does with untreated leather. Do not use aggressive cleaning products; they can damage the treatment and the natural look. Beyond that, the leather does the work itself: it becomes suppler over the years and gains a deeper sheen, so ageing here is not decline but character. Any natural leather can discolour over time through UV exposure, and that includes Italian full-grain leather. The solution lies mainly in placement: do not put the chair directly in front of a window where the sun falls for a large part of the day. If the room gets a lot of direct light, blackout curtains or UV-blocking window film help; in a home cinema those curtains usually hang there for the picture anyway, so what is good for the screen is good for the leather too. Also keep the chair at least 30 centimetres from radiators and other heat sources, because heat dries leather out and can make it crack. Worth knowing: fading caused by sunlight counts as an external influence and is not covered by the warranty, so prevention is the strategy. Choose the spot with care and the leather keeps its colour year after year.
